The government sells it to citizens as relief in the face of horrendous energy prices. On closer inspection, it now turns out to be – shame? It is about the energy voucher worth 150 euros that four million households in Austria are to receive by post. It is said to cushion the sharp rise in energy costs. The eXXpress reported.
What now causes amusement to outrage: This year the voucher is of absolutely no use. The respective electricity supplier should deduct the 150 euros from the annual or final bill – and that won’t be due again until 2023.
An email from the Kelag Group reads: “As soon as the federal government has sent us your data, we will take care of your credit of €150 as part of your next annual or final statement.” One internet user comments with amusement: “Are you kidding? 150 euros, sometime next year?”
In other words, right now, when prices are already skyrocketing, the government’s energy cost equalization is doing absolutely nothing for consumers. You have to wait another year. It will be interesting to see how much 150 euros will actually be worth given the galloping inflation. Citizens are still waiting in vain for further relief this year in view of the rising prices – for example through tax cuts or the abolition of cold progression.
Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) justified the procedure for the voucher as follows: The current price increases would be reflected above all in significantly higher annual accounts. Therefore, the discharge must also take effect at this point in time. It is to be hoped that in view of the energy crisis and war we will not have completely different worries by then.
