The Vienna People’s Party had previously submitted an application by the Vienna People’s Party to provide additional funds to strengthen military security. This had been rejected by the two coalition parties SPÖ and NEOS – as well as by the Greens.
The motion should have ensured that the military budget is increased. The Russian troops’ invasion of the Ukraine in particular made it clear that the security situation had changed significantly. The strengthening of military security through a long-term increase in the standard budget for the federal army is therefore the order of the day in this context, said Mahrer Mahrer during the debate in the Vienna state parliament on the proposal to increase the military budget.
But there was no majority in the Viennese state parliament for this – and that in turn angered the ÖVP. “Today’s debate has made one thing clear again. The People’s Party is the only party that draws the right conclusions from the current crises and takes responsibility.”
