300,000 prisoners of war in just one week, a massive advance from the Austro-Hungarian front line on the Isonzo to the Tagliamento river, then even to the Piave, the Italian armies in dissolution, the government in Rome considering fleeing to Naples: in October 1917 the army surprised of the Kaiser with massive German support once again the Italian army leadership.
The German-Austrian divisions, using new tactics and with the support of poison gas grenades, pushed deep into the municipality of Karfreit/Carporetto in the northern section of the Isonzo Line. The Italian army quickly slipped into chaos, and hundreds of thousands of soldiers suddenly fled .
