Since distance learning has now ended and teaching at schools is practically possible again as before the pandemic, schools should return the laptops borrowed from the City of Vienna in the middle of the school year. So far, students have also been able to use the devices in face-to-face classes.
The union of compulsory school teachers also lacks understanding for the fact that rental devices have to be returned in the middle of the school year. She criticizes that the schools were not given an exact date when the devices must be returned. Many directors have already complained to the union about it. The schools are said to have only been informed a week before collection, which makes planning almost impossible.
According to the office of the responsible Vienna City Councilor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS), the devices should continue to be used. “The loan laptops for compulsory schools in Vienna that were actually made available for distance learning in challenging times of the pandemic will continue to be used in the Viennese educational institutions in the future. How and in what form is currently being worked out by the responsible Municipal Department 56 and the Vienna Education Directorate.
It is not clear why it was not checked whether there was still a need for the schools. There is also no answer as to why the devices are picked up in the middle of the school year.
