Consumers have to rely on their luck when it comes to sunflower oil. Due to delivery bottlenecks, inventories are almost exhausted and deliveries are a long time coming. If you really want sunflower oil, you may have to look in several supermarkets to see if there is any left.
Ukraine is the largest supplier of sunflower oil. Now this oil, which is usually used the most, is turning into liquid gold. Oil prices continue to rise. “We can definitely see that the prices for cooking oils have risen drastically,” confirms Thomas Geppert, the state manager of the hotel and restaurant association Dehoga in Munich. A rationalization is also to be feared. This means that the amount per person is limited when shopping.
The fries at the fast-food giant McDonald’s now come from a different oil. The cooking oil blend, which also contains sunflower oil, has been changed. “We use a vegetable oil mixture for frying our fries – including sunflower and rapeseed oil – with sunflower oil only making up a small part,” says a spokeswoman for McDonald’s Germany in Munich. “Due to the currently limited availability, we will temporarily further reduce this lower proportion of sunflower oil,” she continued.
With 2,000 jobs and free German courses, McDonald’s in Germany is trying to recruit workers from the Ukraine.
Sunflower oil is generally an important basic ingredient in gastronomy, which is why many restaurateurs now feel compelled to act. Thomas Geppert also confirms this: “It is quite conceivable that one or the other restaurateur will adapt his recipe.” The beloved Wiener Schnitzel with fries will not disappear from the menu anytime soon.
