Three ski tourers fell into a crevasse on Saturday in Switzerland in the Aletsch region in Valais, a 28-year-old woman from Bern died and the other two were injured. One of the ski tourers was flown to the Inselspital in Bern in critical condition.
As the Valais canton police announced on Saturday evening, there were five people on a ski tour. The tourers formed two rope teams consisting of a group of three and a group of two. The tour was not accompanied by a mountain guide. Above the “eternal snow field” – at an altitude of 3600 meters – the snow cover suddenly collapsed beneath them.
The group of two and one man from the group of three fell 25 meters into a gap. The Air-Zermatt and Goms mountain rescue teams were able to rescue the injured ski tourers – but any help came too late for the woman.
