After a 37-year-old woman allegedly killed her 35-year-old husband with a knife in the chest in the Vorarlberg municipality of Schwarzach (Bregenz district) on Tuesday evening, the exact background to the crime is still unclear. The woman was transferred to the Feldkirch prison on Wednesday, and the autopsy of her husband’s body is scheduled for today, Thursday.
The cause of death is currently a single stab in the heart – he was so badly injured by the stab with a kitchen knife that he died on the spot during the resuscitation measures, the police said at a press conference on Wednesday. The 37-year-old mother of six children was arrested and said she fully confessed.
The fact is likely to have been preceded by a dispute between the spouses, the investigations into this and the motive continued. “We can’t say anything about that yet,” says Michael Beyrer, deputy head of the Vorarlberg State Criminal Police Office. However, there have always been disagreements between the couple.
The suspected Austrian is the mother of six children between the ages of three and 17, four of whom she shares with the victim, a citizen of the Ivory Coast. The man had lived in Austria since 2009 and had a valid residence permit. According to Beyrer, the man had “appeared to the police” in the past, but no information was given about the type of crime.
According to the current state of investigation, one of the children made the emergency call at the request of the mother. All six were looked after by the crisis intervention team that night and are being handed over to professional care by official order. The suspect was admitted to the Feldkirch prison on Wednesday and said she was “not doing well given the circumstances,” said the press conference.
The man’s body will be autopsied today at the Forensic Medicine Institute in Innsbruck. The autopsy should show how many stab wounds the man was injured. Investigators are currently assuming a fatal stab in the chest.
The motive for the crime is still unclear. According to the police, there was a verbal argument between the spouses before the crime. A toxicological report should clarify in the next few days whether those involved were under the influence of alcohol.
It is not yet known whether one or more of the children saw the crime. According to the police, the woman instructed one of the six children to call the rescue service. The child stated on the phone that it was a stab wound. The children are cared for and interviewed by the crisis intervention team as soon as the situation permits.
