The new advisor to the Austrian Chancellor appeared modest and very relaxed during Nehammer’s explosive trip to Kyiv and Bucha: Kai Diekmann (58) took pictures, stayed in the background and, as always, had friendly conversations with ex-colleagues from other media.
Now the exceptional journalist, who was editor-in-chief of “Bild” from 2001 to 2017, has changed sides: Diekmann will advise the chancellor and the ÖVP leadership with his company – how exactly is not yet known.
However, some information about the new Nehammer-Diekmann cooperation has already leaked out: the appearance should be more dynamic, modern, and the party should also look new. Even the party color, the turquoise of the Kurz era, is currently being discussed.
In any case, the German media professional has what previous advisors to the ÖVP (but also to the SPÖ and FPÖ) certainly did not have: experience from the daily media biz – and excellent contacts with many publishers and editors-in-chief throughout the German-speaking world.
Interesting in this context is the current devastating criticism of the “Bild” newspaper on the visit of the Austrian Chancellor to Vladimir Putin: Industry insiders suspect that it has also become known in the “Bild” boardroom that Diekmann is now advising Nehammer – and this Attacks against the Chancellor could be justified by the fact that Diekmann left the publishing house in Berlin in 2017, not quite in peace.
It will also be exciting to see how the not so insignificant provincial governors of the ÖVP will assess this new advisory activity.
