Manchester United suffered a setback in the Premier League battle for Champions League spots. The record-breaking English champions lost 1-0 in the Premier League to Everton on Saturday. Everton’s gold goal was scored by Anthony Gordon with a one from the back of United-Captain Harry Maguire deflected shot (27th). The “Toffees” increased their lead on the relegation zone to four points for the time being, but are still in 17th place in the table. In fourth place, the current seventh in the table is still three points behind. United has only won one of the last seven competitive games, in the Champions League they lost to Atletico Madrid in the round of 16.
Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo lost his nerve after losing 1-0 to Everton. Photos have been shared on social media of Cristiano Ronaldo slapping the phone out of a supporter’s hand as he left the pitch at Goodison Park in frustration over the bankruptcy of the relegation contenders.
Ronaldo apologized for his freak out on social media. “I would like to apologize for my freak out and – if it’s possible – invite the fan to attend a game at Old Trafford,” Ronaldo said on Instagram. He sees his apology as a “sign of fair play and sportsmanship”. Manchester United is investigating the incident. As seventh in the table, the record champion threatens to miss out on the Champions League places for the coming season.
