Chancellor: “We have an attitude that Russia does not like”

All night by train through the country devastated by rockets and artillery. It is a historic visit that Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) is paying to Ukraine. And a very emotional one. At an impromptu press conference, the Chancellor explains the reason for his trip.

Historical and emotional. These two words best sum up Nehammer’s trip to the Ukraine. First of all: It is not a single attempt that Austria’s chancellor dares to do here. In close consultation with his German counterpart Olaf Scholz (SPD) and the EU Parliament, he will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday.

No tips from Austria

There will be no outside advice for the Ukrainians from Austria’s chancellor, the chancellor explains in an improvised PK shortly before arriving in the capital of the invaded country. eXXpress editor-in-chief Richard Schmitt is also on the train on the way from Poland to Kyiv.

According to Nehammer, Austria is trying to negotiate with both parties. But it is clear that Ukraine – as the country attacked – always has priority. This attitude, like that of Switzerland, was clear from the start.
