Not only with her opinion research, but also with her behavior as a driver, pollster Sabine Beinschab manages to attract the attention of the authorities. Particularly piquant: Both times she gets her former superior, ex-minister Sophie Karmasin, into trouble. The affair that led to the resignation of ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz is definitely enriched by a highly bizarre farce.
But first things first.
Beinschab is Karmasin’s former employee and is suspected of having charged the Ministry of Finance for ÖVP party surveys disguised as “studies”. In her testimony before the WKStA, Beinschab also incriminated Karmasin, who was later also taken into custody – because of the further risk of committing a crime. Immediately after Karmasin was released, her former associate Beinschab got her into trouble again.
The “Kurier” has the police report on this as well as the subsequent correspondence between the police, WKStA and Beinschab’s lawyer.
On March 28 at around 5:25 p.m. on the Südautobahn in the direction of Graz, at Vösendorf, the “Tribus 1” patrolman overtook a car that was driving in the third lane. The police report summarizes the subsequent events as follows: “The officers noticed that the driver of the vehicle was holding a mobile phone in her left hand and that the driver was mainly looking at the display. She also operated the touchscreen of her smartphone with the thumb of her left hand. At first, the driver did not notice the patrol car, which was now driving at the same height. Only when district inspector L. switched on the blue light did the driver look in his direction. District Inspector L. gave her a hand signal to follow the patrol car, which she confirmed with a nod.”
During the subsequent official act at a gas station, the police officers determined that the driver was the well-known Sabine Beinschab. With her subsequent statement to the inspectors, she caused her former boss problems again. She explained that she had used the mobile phone because she had been notified by Sophie Karmasin that she had been released.
Oh dear! On the following day, the police officers were able to gather from the media that Karmasin had been released under the condition of a ban on contact with the accused and witnesses – especially with Sabine Beinschab. The police immediately reported the incident to the WKStA.
