US President Joe Biden will send 100 Switchblade kamikaze drones to Ukraine as part of a newly unveiled military aid package. These are intended to make life significantly more difficult for Russians.
The remote-controlled drones can travel distances of up to 38 kilometers and circle in the air for up to 40 minutes before pouncing on their victim at 100 km/h – and all this with a size that fits in any backpack.
There are two versions of the switchblade: the 300 and the 600.
The smaller model, the Switchblade 300, is equipped with a Claymore mine explosive charge consisting of C-4 explosives and hundreds of metal balls. The drone is 60 centimeters long and weighs 2.2 kilograms. It can be fired at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour, but can only remain in the air for 15 minutes with a maximum range of 9.7 kilometers.
The 54-kilogram Switchblade 600 has both a larger explosive charge and a longer range of 40 minutes, or 40 kilometers – but only reaches a speed of 112 kilometers per hour. She can even destroy a tank in the process.
The new $800 million aid package includes Kamikaze drones, 800 Stinger anti-aircraft systems, 2,000 Javelins, 1,000 light anti-tank weapons and 6,000 AT-4 man-portable anti-tank weapons.
