It was the last game of Franco Foda’s era. On Tuesday, the German sat on the ÖFB bench for the last time against Scotland. Foda had to do without some players before the game. Stefan Posch and Louis Schaub were missing after a positive corona test. David Alaba and Xaver Schlager traveled back to their clubs as agreed. Nicolas Seiwald, on the other hand, was assigned to the U21 team. Aleksandar Dragovic completed his 100th international match in the ÖFB jersey.
Austria had their first big chance in the 6th minute through Kalajdzic. But his header didn’t find its way into the goal thanks to a strong save from Scotland keeper Gordon. A minute later, Scotland almost took the lead. Austria offered a lot of space on the defensive. McGinn was completely alone in front of Bachmann. Luckily he failed and pushed the ball just past the long corner. After 14 minutes, Kalajdzic appeared dangerous again. Lazaro let the ball bounce off the Stuttgart striker. Kalajdzic took the ball with a volley, but failed again at Gordon. Two minutes later Arnautovic tried acrobatic. But his attempt went over the goal of the guests.
In the 21st minute, Laimer put the ball back to Arnautovic. However, the Italy legionnaire was unable to put Austria in the lead – again Gordon had his hands in the game. Seven minutes later it was the Scots who celebrated the opening goal. After a corner kick, Hanley was able to win the header duel against Hinteregger on the second pole. The ball comes off the crossbar to Hendry. He headed the ball over the line. Austria was able to create a few chances in the first half – but the ball didn’t want to go into the goal. With 35 minutes played, a Scotland defender scraped the ball off the line after an Arnautovic try. Scotland leads 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.
From an Austrian point of view, the start of the second half was bitter. After 56 minutes, McGinn made it 2-0 for Scotland. Tierney played the ball back down the left flank to McGinn, who was able to put the ball under the bar. In the 75th minute, the ÖFB-Elf finally scored the goal. Gregoritsch hit the far corner with his head and thus marked the 1:2. A few minutes later Schöpf let Austria celebrate again when he was able to place the ball in the far corner from the penalty area. Seconds later, the ÖFB-Elf could even have turned the game. But Gordon parried a good finish from Weimann.
In the end it was a 2:2 draw. So Franco Foda was not allowed to win again in his last game. Now the ÖFB will be looking for a new team boss.
