According to British intelligence services, the private Russian security company “Group Wagner” has been relocated to eastern Ukraine. More than 1,000 mercenaries, including senior leaders of the organization, are said to be deployed in combat operations, according to an update from the UK Ministry of Defense, citing intelligence information. The Wagner group, considered Putin’s elite military unit, is known for its brutal and precise approach and has been active in Ukraine since 2014.
However, the Wagner Group is not a state but a private security and military company that operates in Russian trouble spots such as Syria, Ukraine and, since 2020, Central Africa. The exact number of mercenaries is not known, but estimates put the number at 3,500.
