Austrian authorities supported the evacuation of the NGO “kleine Herzen”, which works for children in the Ukraine and Russia, among other places. According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, several children had to be treated in intensive care immediately after entering the country.
The rest of the convoy, which consisted of two coaches, escort vehicles and ambulances, continued to Burgauberg-Neudauberg (Güssing district) in southern Burgenland, it said. The municipality had agreed to provide accommodation and care for the children and their carers. According to the ministry, the Austrian consulate general in the Polish city of Kraków and a team from the foreign office, the police special unit Cobra and the army fighter commando were involved in the evacuation. The children, some of whom are severely disabled, are between the ages of one and six years old.
