Thousands of residents of Mariupol are currently being forcibly deported to Russia by the Russian army. This is claimed by several Ukrainian personalities and authorities, including the city council of the port city of Mariupol. You compare the Russians’ approach to that of the Nazis.
According to the reports, residents of the Levoberezhny district are gradually being deported en masse to Russian territory. A total of around 15,000 residents of Mariupol are said to have been illegally deported, i.e. around half of all residents who were still in the Levoberezhny district.
“It is well known that the squatters force the already war-weary people with an ultimatum to get on buses,” reports the city council. “There are also reports that the Russian occupiers are taking away people’s passports and other Ukrainian identity documents.”
The abducted people are first to be taken to so-called filtration camps, from where they are then redistributed to various remote Russian cities. According to the Defense Intelligence Service of Ukraine, the Ukrainians will then be “offered” official employment. Those who agree will receive documents prohibiting them from leaving these regions for two years. The regions offered include Sakhalin, an island near Japan.
“The Russian side regularly announces the possible evacuation of people to the Ukrainian-controlled area, but in reality this never happens,” complains the Mariupol City Council. “For 20 days, the squatters have been blocking the evacuation convoy and preventing people from being safely rescued. At the moment, the buses that went from Zaporizhia to Berdyansk to evacuate the population of Mariupol are blocked. Apparently this is only done to prevent people from returning to the Ukrainian-controlled areas. And that’s exactly what the residents of the Ukrainian city want.”
The mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boychenko, raises serious allegations: “What the Russian occupiers are doing defies explanation. First they blockade a peaceful city, deliberately killing people, and then forcibly taking them into their own territory.” What the “occupiers” are doing is familiar to the older generation who lived through the Second World War, when the Nazis violently captured people. “Unfortunately, history repeats itself. Only now there are racists instead of Nazis.”
During World War II, Nazi Germany deported Jews and other victims to ghettos, execution sites, and concentration camps in German-occupied territories. In many of these camps, the Nazis used the forced labor of so-called “enemies of the state” for economic gain and to meet wartime labor shortages.
According to Mayor Boychenko, a database of deported residents of Mariupol is now being created and efforts will be made to get them back to Ukraine, the mayor reports.
Already over the weekend, Ukraine accused Russia of forcibly abducting thousands of people in the besieged city of Mariupol, comparing these tactics to the events of World War II – eXXpress reported. Already Inna Sovsun, a Ukrainian MP, claimed on Sunday that people in Mariupol are being taken across the border against their will. “They take Ukrainian citizens, send them to so-called filtration camps, and then take them to faraway parts of Russia where they have to work for free,” Sovsun told Times Radio. “That is the logic of Nazi Germany.”
