Germany shot 33 million tons more exhaust gases into the air last year than in 2020. The climate goal of producing 40 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 was therefore not achieved.
Preliminary data from the German Federal Environment Agency and the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection show that emissions of gases that are harmful to the climate have actually fallen by only 38.7 percent.
The final results on the emission of GHG emissions are not expected to be published until the beginning of 2023. However, this much is already clear: the problem sectors were reported to be transport and buildings.

“Almost half of the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 has already been lost,” said UBA President Dirk Messner. “Our numbers clearly show that the federal government’s goals must be addressed as soon as possible.”
Germany’s plan to be greenhouse gas neutral by 2045 thus falls a step behind. The expansion of renewable energies should continue to be promoted.
