As of today, Sunday, the Winter Paralympics in Beijing are already a thing of the past. The ÖPC team travels back to Vienna with 13 medals in their luggage. A balance with which one can be very satisfied. Hans Niessl also took the opportunity to congratulate the Paralympic athletes on their success. In a broadcast, the President of Sport Austria referred to the strong symbolic power of Ukraine’s historically best result.
“13 medals – 5 gold, 5 silver and three bronze – 6th place in the medal standings! Our athletes showed impressive performances at the Paralympics in Beijing and did great! You are role models for many! I would like to thank all participants, supervisors and officials of the ÖPC team for their great commitment and I would like to take this opportunity to point out another aspect of these Paralympics: The fact that Ukraine finished these games behind host China (61) with a total of 29 Finishing second in medals and achieving her best result ever is a big, strong sign at this tragic time!”
From an Austrian point of view, one athlete in particular stood out: Johannes Aigner! The Lower Austrian (16) won silver again in the slalom today, Sunday. With that, Aigner won a total of five medals in Beijing and made history with it. Because he is the first Austrian athlete ever to win five medals in one place. Johannes Aigner previously secured gold in downhill and giant slalom, silver in super combination and bronze in super-G.
