According to the RIA Novosti news agency, Russian-backed rebels have taken the Ukrainian city of Volnovakha to the north of the besieged port city of Mariupol. The agency cited the Russian Defense Ministry. Volnowakha is of strategic importance as the northern entrance to Mariupol. Earlier, the Ukrainian rescue service reported attacks on civilian targets in the central Ukrainian city Dnipro.
At least one person was killed. The attacks happened near a kindergarten and a residential building. In the morning, “there were three airstrikes in the city, hitting a kindergarten, an apartment building and a two-story shoe factory,” rescuers said. The city of about one million inhabitants had so far been spared from major Russian attacks.
