Entrepreneur and political blogger Gerald Markel has repeatedly found during his stays abroad that Austria’s development over the past two years has caused bewilderment beyond the national borders. “What’s the matter with Austria?” one asks him. His answer is clear: Austria has a huge media problem.

What’s the matter with Austria?
Dobro Iutro from Croatia and soon Ciao Ragazze in Italy. I have to honestly tell you that my decision to expand professionally into our neighboring countries is turning out to be more and more of a fruitful decision. In many ways.
The need to spend a few days abroad every two weeks inevitably broadens the general horizon and on the other hand, shows me incredibly drastically how bad the reality in my home country Austria has become.
And it’s not just me – in conversations with people in Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia and Italy – the question comes up everywhere in small talk from business partners: “What’s the matter with Austria?”
Many here love our country. Almost all of them have often been our guests, an unbelievable number have family or professional ties to Austria and without exception all conversations about our homeland have the same development. You can’t believe what has become of Austria.
Austria became the eyesore of Europe
Five lockdowns in Austria, more than any other country in Europe. The longest lockdown for gastronomy and hotels in Europe. The longest school closures, the toughest and stupidest measures in schools, the most catastrophic collateral damage to children and young people in Europe. The most comprehensive mask requirements (only Italy was worse at times), the only country in Europe with FFP2.
No country in Europe spent more money on pointless mass tests, Austria carried out more tests in 2021 than ALL neighboring countries TOGETHER. Yes, you read that right – Vienna alone did more tests in 2021 than ALL of Germany!
No country in Europe has introduced a general obligation to vaccinate, no country in Europe has had nationwide exclusion of the unvaccinated and no country AROUND THE WORLD except Austria has made a lockdown only for the unvaccinated!
And STILL Austria has more Covid deaths in the statistics per 100,000 people than ALL neighboring countries!
It is a fact – the worst, most inept and most inhumane government of all time has made Austria the eyesore of Europe in the last two years. There is no neighboring country where I am not asked why we Austrians put up with this, there is no conversation in which I am not asked about the Austrian madness of the Covid hysteria. And the most frequently asked question is: “How did this happen?”
The mainstream media is the biggest threat
I always have the same answer to that: Because our entire media landscape (with the exception of the Mateschitz media) is bought or supports our government for ideological reasons.
No other coalition would still be in office after the madness of the last two years. No other government would have survived the myriad debacles of the Covid strategy.
This government only exists because of the help of the media, she only got her policies through with the help of the media and she only stays in office with the help of the mainstream media.
The role of the mainstream media in the last two years, during the epidemic and now in the Ukraine crisis is not discussed at all. The fact that the tabloid media is bought with tax money and the so-called quality media are indirectly controlled by the Soros system (keyword Project Syndicate) is not an issue in public discourse. The fact that all the lies and exaggerations about Covid, the vaccinations, the effectiveness of measures and the mask requirement have persisted for so long because the mainstream media made it possible is not an issue. The fact that freedom of expression no longer exists and censorship has become part of everyday life is not an issue.
I’ve been writing it on all my channels for years and it’s my deep belief: The world of mainstream media is the greatest threat to our society, our freedom – and as we are now seeing – also to our prosperity.
Media landscape must be restructured
As long as we allow ourselves to be showered with propaganda, lies and manipulations on a daily basis, as long as we accept with impunity that opinions and ideologies are conveyed instead of information, it makes absolutely no difference which politician or party is at the top.
The world of mainstream media needs to be restructured from the ground up, people must ensure that they have unimpeded and unfiltered access to all the information they need to form their opinions and make decisions at all times.
The answer to the question at the beginning about my friends here abroad is: Austria has a huge media problem. That’s why it is how it is.
