Recommended by Orban: Katalin Novák becomes the first woman to be elected President of Hungary
The lawyer, economist and former family minister was elected with a two-thirds majority. She is not only the first woman to hold this position in Hungary, but also the youngest President of the European Union.
Hungary’s new President Katalin Novák
In her speech, Katalin Novák (44) made it clear that she wanted to do everything for peace – Hungary belongs to Europe and Europe to Hungary. Even though the opposition criticized the election of Orbán confidants, it received four more votes than the 133 Fidesz MPs. Her opponent Péter Róna (79) had no chance and was defeated by 51 votes.
