The situation for trainees on the labor market is getting worse. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, many young people seem to have lost interest in an apprenticeship, while companies are desperately looking for young people more than ever. In 2021, for the first time, there were more open apprenticeships than people looking for them, as an analysis by the Viennese think tank Agenda Austria shows.
While in 2008 there were around 2,000 more open apprenticeships than there were applicants, this ratio has now reversed. There was also a trend reversal in terms of job vacancies. These have also reached a record value.
The regional differences are also large: in Vienna in 2021 there were more than six applicants for an apprenticeship position, while in Salzburg, on the other hand, there were four vacant apprenticeship positions for one applicant. However, the overall increase in the number of vacancies is a sign that the economy and the labor market situation are slowly recovering, says the Agenda.
