Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer is traveling to the Gulf region together with Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler and Raw Materials Minister Elisabeth Köstinger to secure Austria’s gas supply. A visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with which Austria has a strategic partnership, and to Qatar are planned. Talks are also pending with the Crown Prince Sheikh Muhammad bin Zayed al-Nahyan in Abu Dhabi and with the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in Doha.
The short-term talks in the UAE and Qatar are about the short and medium-term supply of natural gas in order to become more independent from Russia in the future. “The United Arab Emirates and Qatar are important partners for Austria and significant energy suppliers. I would therefore like to use our trip above all to talk about securing Austria’s gas and energy supply,” said Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer in advance.
In this context, the main focus will be on the possible delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) – which is why representatives of OMV will also be making the trip.
The topic of green hydrogen will also play an important role. Raw materials minister Elisabeth Köstinger will therefore sign an agreement on cooperation with the UAE in this area. The aim is to make Austria’s energy mix more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
