The Russians intensify their attack. After conquering a major Ukrainian city – Cherson – for the first time during the night, they are now apparently planning an attack on another port city: Odessa on the Black Sea. Several Russian warships have already left Crimea and are heading for Odessa.
A US official is anticipating an impending attack on Odessa, Ukraine’s third largest city, which will also be carried out by the Russian naval fleet.
Meanwhile, Cherson, with a population of 300,000, is already under the control of Putin’s armed forces. Igor Kolykhaiev, the city’s mayor, said around 1am that “armed visitors” stormed a council meeting and imposed new rules, including a strict curfew. He urged citizens to comply.
However, it is by no means clear whether Ukrainian forces have completely withdrawn. The UK Ministry of Defense said on Thursday the situation was “unclear”.
So far, the Russian military operation had been catastrophically organized, as numerous military experts are now saying. One thing is clear: sooner or later the Russian armed forces also want to take Kyiv, the capital. In September 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a telephone conversation with then-Commission President José Manuel Barroso: “If I wanted to, I could take Kyiv within two weeks.”
With Thursday it is already eight days that this war has lasted. . .
