The two looters, who are said to have been caught in the act of stealing in Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine by Ukrainian militia units, are presented naked and with their hands tied. The Ukrainian security forces will also treat their compatriots brutally if they are caught committing crimes during the war.
The scene is reminiscent of the cruel criminal law practice in the Middle Ages – apparently the Ukrainians want to prevent further such acts with these pictures, which they share on social media platforms. Poverty in the country was high even before the war broke out: the monthly per capita income was 540 euros in the previous year and only suddenly rose to 641 euros in December 2021.
In general, Ukraine now has massive problems with the security situation: Russian troops are also using the advance to loot – the eXXpress has already published several videos from surveillance cameras. If the Russian soldiers come to the larger cities, the number of thefts will probably increase.
