On the seventh day after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, fighting over the country that Putin appears to regard as Russian territory, but which sees itself as self-contained, free and closer to the EU, continues to rage fiercely. Already 2,000 civilians are said to have fallen victim to the attacks by Putin’s troops on the Ukrainian side, and this does not include the number of fallen soldiers. While Ukraine speaks of almost 6,000 fallen Russian soldiers, Russia reports 498 dead on its own side. The disagreements also reflect the – so far – unsuccessful peace negotiations, which ended unsuccessfully on Monday and are to be continued on Wednesday evening.
