Christian Wehrschütz (61) risks his life every day for his “ZiB” reports from the war zone in Ukraine, thousands of Austrians are full of appreciation for the quality and topicality of his reports. Out of concern about a drone attack, Wehrschütz recently sent his report from Ukraine even in the semi-darkness – there was a lot of praise for it on all social media channels.
In the ORF itself, however, the dedicated war correspondent and East expert should also have “colleagues” who don’t mean well with him. Ö1 employee Stefan Kappacher has now published an irritating post on Twitter – he actually praised the lines of a Wiener Wochenblattl editor who mocked Christian Wehrschütz as a “clown in the crisis area”. And: Wehrschütz “doesn’t always say what he’s talking about, but he’s always there for that”.
Even by ORF standards, this attack on a colleague on the open stage is unusually tough. An insider on Küniglberg explained to the eXXpress: “Wehrschütz does not belong in the left-leaning bubble that only praises SPÖ, NEOS and Green politicians, but persecutes all other party politicians. That alone makes him a target for these guys.”
The fact that the ORF top tolerates such processes is already being discussed emotionally on social media channels.
