Former US President Donald Trump praised Russian President Vladimir Putin for his move to recognize the Donbass republics. This is “brilliant,” said the Republican. The Russian head of state acted brilliantly.
Former US President Donald Trump has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin for his strategy in eastern Ukraine. The Russian head of state simply politically outmaneuvered Joe Biden by declaring the breakaway republics of Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (LPR) sovereign states. “I walked in yesterday and there was a TV screen and I said, ‘That’s awesome,'” Trump said in an interview with radio host Buck Sexton on Tuesday. “Putin declares a large part of Ukraine – Ukraine – independent.” He added gleefully, “Oh, that’s wonderful.”
Trump was referring to President Putin’s announcement Monday that Russia would promptly recognize the sovereignty of the DPR and LPR, which declared their independence after a US-backed overthrow of Ukraine’s elected leadership in 2014. Following that decision, Putin on Tuesday received the approval of lawmakers to send Russian forces to Donbass as peacekeepers for the DPR and LPR. However, the Russian leader later clarified that the approval did not mean that Russian troops would immediately be deployed to the republics. Nevertheless, the Western Allies are already talking about an “invasion” of Ukraine.
Escalation under Trump never conceivable
The former US commander in chief said such a turn of events would never have happened had he still been in office. He accused his predecessor of incompetence and called Russia’s actions in the Donbass, including Moscow’s possible peacekeeping mission, “smart”. And further: “This is the strongest peacekeeping force – we could use them on our southern border,” Trump joked. “This is the strongest peacekeeping force I’ve ever seen. There were more tanks than I’ve ever seen. You will definitely keep the peace.” With this, Trump effectively admits that Kiev is the aggressor in relation to Donbass. Even if he did not put pressure on Kiev to implement the Minsk agreement during his tenure.
Joe Biden too weak for answers
Trump has argued that Russia is essentially grabbing territory without serious consequences, which he says is because Putin is a “smart guy.” “Here’s a man who’s very smart, I know him very well,” Trump said. “Here’s a guy saying, ‘You know, I’m going to declare a large part of Ukraine independent’, he used the word ‘independent’. And we’re going to go out, and we’re going to go in, and we’re going to help keep the peace.” Trump also stated: “You have to say that that’s pretty clever. And do you know how Biden reacted to that? There was no answer. They didn’t have any for this. Well, that’s very sad.”
When asked by Sexton how US strategy in Ukraine had gone awry, Trump said: “What went wrong was a rigged election and what went wrong is a candidate who shouldn’t be there and a man who has no idea what he’s doing.” Now the only question is: What would the situation be like today if Donald Trump were still President of the United States?
