Today, Saturday morning, climate activists demonstrated against the construction of the so-called city street in Vienna-Donaustadt. They occupied a tree in Quadenstraße and built a wooden platform on it. The activists are protesting against the clearing of more trees for road construction, according to a broadcast. According to police spokesman Mohamed Ibrahim, the police are on site to clarify the situation.
The “LobauBleibt” movement wants to continue to actively fight against the mega-project of the city street. This was announced according to the broadcast. But this action should not be the last. Around 400 trees were cut down on the day the protest camp on Hausfeldstrasse was cleared on February 1, and environmentalists warned that over 100 more are now expected to fall.
“We are in a climate crisis: not a single tree may fall, not another meter of highway may be built,” emphasized “LobauBleibt” spokeswoman Lena Schilling from the youth council. The trees would be missed by the residents “in the next sweltering summer – especially because this policy will further accelerate global warming,” said Lucia Steinwender from “System Change, not Climate Change”.
