Among the most prominent signatories so far are Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (both Greens) and Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD). According to a report, the signatories so far are 153 Social Democrats, 60 Greens, three FDP politicians and two Leftists.
The draft is to be discussed in the Bundestag as well as a competing proposal for the possible introduction of compulsory vaccination from the age of 50 and a motion against compulsory vaccination without party pressure. The Union faction has also submitted its own application, which initially only provides for a vaccination register and then a graduated plan with a possible vaccination obligation for certain groups depending on the pandemic situation. The traffic light partners have agreed on a first reading on March 14th.
According to the Robert Koch Institute, around three quarters of the population in Germany are currently fully vaccinated against Covid-19. More than half (55.7 percent) have already received a booster. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) considers compulsory vaccination to be crucial for combating a new corona wave in autumn. Various models are currently being discussed for a general obligation to vaccinate in Germany. They range from the refusal of any corona vaccination to a general vaccination from the age of 18. Such an obligation applies to staff in health and care facilities from mid-March.
