The Olympic Games always write sensational stories – not only in the person of Johannes Strolz. Miracles happen again and again in ice hockey – like in Lake Placid in 1980, where the USA sensationally beat the seemingly unbeatable Soviet Union and ended up winning the gold medal. It was the “Miracle on Ice” of Lake Placid. This miracle was even made into a movie – starring a certain Kurt Russell.
Slovakia is not quite there yet. However, our neighbors sensationally prevailed against the USA in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games. This means that the Slovaks are the first semi-finalists at the Olympic Winter Games. The ex-world champion defeated the young team USA 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out on Wednesday. Peter Cehlarik converted the decisive attempt. Captain Marek Hrivik’s equalizer 44 seconds before the end of regular time saved the Slovaks to make it 2-2 without a goal being scored.
Russia’s Olympic team leads 2-1 after two thirds against Denmark. At 9:40 a.m. Central European Time, Finland challenges Switzerland. At 2:30 p.m., Finland vs. Canada is a real ice hockey treat.
