The grocer Spar is recalling its own brand “Natur*pur organic almonds 200g”. The reason: an increased proportion of bitter almonds, which were discovered in two batch numbers during a routine quality control. It is requested not to eat the affected product, but to return it to a branch of the Spar, Eurospar, Interspar and Maxi supermarkets.
Symptoms appear soon after consumption
Bitter almonds taste very bitter. They contain amygdalin, a substance that splits off small amounts of toxic hydrocyanic acid. Hydrocyanic acid is released during digestion, which can lead to symptoms of poisoning. Soon after consumption, this acid leads to headaches, gastrointestinal complaints, dizziness and cramps, even coma and death. Special care should be taken with children and the elderly, according to the Health and Food Safety Agency Ages. Even very small amounts would be enough to cause severe poisoning.
Affected are “SPAR Natur*pur organic almonds 200g” with the batch numbers L7111297 (Best before August 29th, 2022) and L7111298 (Best before August 29th, 2022).
Alnatura also recalled almonds

Affected were Alnatura almonds, 200g with an expiration date of November 29th, 2022, Alnatura ground almonds, 150g with an expiration date of August 10th, 2022 and Alnatura nut mix roasted, 150g with an expiration date of September 2nd, 2022 and September 7th, 2022.
