This series of posters causes an uproar in Upper Austria: Crying children are asked to be vaccinated. Without prior knowledge, it is not clear who the advertising banners come from. However, it is not the Upper Austrian state government – the poster campaign comes from the Upper Austrian SPÖ: In order to advance the vaccination progress in the bottom-ranking state of Upper Austria, the state party would have opted for these drastic poster images, said the SPÖ health spokesman Peter Binder on Monday. In the din surrounding the announcement of the opening steps, vaccination had taken a back seat in the past few days, said the 3rd President of the State Parliament. “Of all the federal states, Upper Austria in particular still needs the strongest impetus to catch up with the corona vaccinations.” In Upper Austria, 400,000 people are not vaccinated against Covid-19. More and more experts are now questioning whether this still makes sense given the ineffectiveness of the vaccine against the omicron mutation.
As expected, criticism comes from the opposition, but also from his own party. “Abusing crying children for vaccination advertising is simply scandalous,” said FPÖ club chairman Herwig Mahr. “We have nothing against honest enlightenment. But that’s just ungustative and unreflected propaganda.” The SPÖ should stop the campaign “immediately”.
National Councilor Dietmar Keck (SPÖ) criticizes the campaign sharply: “If you link children and death, a limit has been crossed,” he said, “that doesn’t work at all”. Apart from the subject, it is not the task of the SPÖ to carry out a vaccination campaign, this is a matter for the responsible members of the government. He demands the resignation of the responsible state party leader Birgit Gerstorfer and state manager Georg Brockmeyer.
