2021 was definitely one of the toughest for the ÖVP. In the past year, which was marked by scandals, the advertisement affair, the resignations of ex-chancellor and VP figurehead Sebastian Kurz, ex-finance minister Gernot Blümel and Co. even pushed the pandemic into the background for brief moments, as the leadership of the People’s Party had to Completely reorganize parts. At the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year, the ÖVP is still a major partner in the governing coalition and, with many new appointments in high offices, is facing new, major challenges such as the elections in Lower Austria or the entry into force of general vaccination in Austria from February 3, 2021.
This time “10 vor 8” on eXXpressTV is about all that and more. The new general secretary of the ÖVP, Laura Sachslehner, takes a seat at eXXpress editor-in-chief Richard Schmitt in the studio. Sachslehner, at just 27, is one of the youngest ever top-level politicians in the country and made headlines in late 2021 when it was announced that she would take over as secretary-general from Axel Melchior in the new year. In “10 vor 8” she explains how the ÖVP will now reposition itself after the scandal year, which topics will be given particular weight, how cooperation with the Greens will continue and how to anticipate major dates such as the introduction of compulsory vaccination and the elections in Lower Austria.
