They usually come to Switzerland by night train and are mostly young, male, from Afghanistan and with Austrian asylum papers. The Swiss authorities pick up around 30 people at the Buchs border station every day. Your goal is not the Confederation but France, as the SRF reports.
In December alone, 2,617 illegal migrants were apprehended in Switzerland. Of these, 1,044 people came from Afghanistan who entered the country via the eastern border. In the vast majority of cases, Switzerland is just a transit country for them, and many stated in the survey that they actually wanted to travel to France. The majority, however, had previously applied for asylum in Austria. Apparently, however, the Afghans assume that they will not be granted the right to stay in this country, so they try their luck in France.
