The Bregenz Festival mourns the Mexican tenor Rafael Rojas (59). Rojas, who had sung the title role in the opera “Nero” at the Bregenz Festival Hall in the summer of 2021, died last Tuesday. “We are dismayed and deeply saddened by the sudden death of Rafael,” said director Elisabeth Sobotka. Rojas, who was heard several times in Bregenz, was one of the outstanding opera singers of his time.
The tenor made his European debut in the summer of 1999 on the lake stage of the Bregenz Festival: as Gustavo in “Ein Masked Ball”, a role which he took up again a year later. In 2001 he played Rodolfo in “La Bohème” and in 2015 and 2016 as Calaf in “Turandot”. Last summer, Deutschlandfunk commented on his performance in “Nero”: “The score needs large voices to shine. Like that of Rafael Rojas as Emperor Nero.”
