Karas was previously one of the 14 vice-presidents of the EU parliament. The ÖVP deputy achieved the highest approval with 536 votes, Regner got 434 votes.
“It is a sign of appreciation and trust that Karas has been entrusted with this responsible position by the plenum of the European Parliament for the third time,” congratulated ÖVP delegation leader Angelika Winzig. “He is an experienced and deserving European politician who will continue to master this task with great skill.”
Party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner and Europe spokesman Jörg Leichtfried congratulated the SPÖ. “Evelyn Regner is one of the most prominent and experienced European politicians. Her election as Vice President is an important confirmation of her strong commitment to better working conditions, fair taxes and equal opportunities for women and men,” said Rendi-Wagner. Leichtfried also emphasized Regner’s commitment to a progressive and social Europe. Your persistent commitment to workers’ rights and tax justice is “more necessary than ever”.
“With Othmar Karas and Evelyn Regner, two members of the presidency of the European Movement Austria (EBÖ) and proven comrades-in-arms for a strong common Europe were elected Vice Presidents of the European Parliament,” said Christoph Leitl, President of the European Movement Austria (EBÖ). “May the two of them strengthen the currently weak Europe,” said Leitl.
