The Viennese ice cream dream is rapidly taking shape. 300 workers have been working on Vienna’s largest ice skating paradise since December 27th. It should be ready by Wednesday, January 19th. The 1150 square meter “Sky Rink” terrace can be seen from afar. The containers, where the cash register and ice skate rental will move in in a few days, have been set up.
“The City of Vienna is doing everything it can to offer the citizens a very special kind of ice skating experience with the Vienna Ice Dream that is not only fun, but above all safe,” emphasizes Mayor Michael Ludwig. On the town hall square, “an impressive open-air sports facility that is second to none in the world” is being built on a usable area of 13,200 square meters. Finance City Councilor Peter Hanke adds: “This year, the ice cream dream is not only bigger than ever before, the gastronomy is also returning and offers visitors selected delicacies in organic quality.”
Not only has the ice surface grown this season, the newly designed indoor restaurant in the industrial bistro style also presents itself with a generous glass front, flooded with sunlight and with a real conservatory flair. As the world’s largest organic restaurant, “Kolarik am Wiener Eistraum” offers its range of food and drinks from 100 percent organic production.
In addition to the legendary, crispy grilled Surstelze and the obligatory Krügerl, easily digestible creations such as braised vegetables or four variations of the homemade Glorietta potato pancakes can also be enjoyed by the whole family at Wiener Eistraum 2022.
There is also an opportunity to quench hunger and thirst outdoors. Visitors can try the freshly prepared delicacies from “Nigls” under the arcades of the Sky Rink and enjoy them on the new benches and tables next to the ice surface. Hot spaetzle, tasty hot dogs and a small but fine range of vegan delicacies, but also meat loaf and sausages from Ottakring, hearty lentil stew with braised beets or the insect burger from Zirp-Future Food are available to enjoy and taste at the Wiener Eistraum 2022 .
There is still a lot to be done: 22 articulated lorries deliver the modern ice technology, which is housed in part of the building container. 1700 square meters of wood and 5500 square meters of wooden platform form the floor for future visitors in the lounge area in front of the ice rinks. Only five percent of all materials have to be replaced annually due to damage, the rest is reused in the next season.
This year, visitors can purchase tickets and complete the mandatory registration online in advance. Of course, this is still possible on site for last-minute visitors.
