In Styria, on January 11th, there was an unbelievable case of discrimination, exclusion and probably almost a threat to the welfare of children. There, a 9-year-old boy was allegedly personally forced by the school director to write a class test outdoors – in winter and when the temperatures were below zero. The elementary school director did not want to accept a medically certified mask exemption.

The photo has already been widely shared on Facebook, and it obviously shows an underage child. Wrapped up tightly to protect himself from the freezing cold in Austrian Styria, his satchel is next to him. The student is sitting outside in front of an open window in his school. He was referred to a written classroom exam on January 11 because he cannot wear a mask for health reasons.
Particularly disturbing: The headmistress is said to have thrown the boy out in the truest sense of the word. These highly irritating scenes are said to have happened in Voitsberg in Styria earlier this week. The reported first the Kronenzeitung and then also the German TV station RTL. The school management is said to have been informed by the parents before the end of the Christmas holidays that the underage pupil was released from wearing a mask. As early as January 10th, the first day of school after the holidays, the student was allowed to Facebook-Posting after not enter the school building.
Case becomes a political issue: FPÖ speaks of a “special class scandal”
For the scheduled written exam on January 11, the 9-year-old presented a medical mask certificate and a negative corona test. The certificate exempts him from wearing a mask. The controversial mask requirement has been with us since the beginning of the so-called pandemic to this day, but the mask has long since made an impressive development. From an element of supposed protection against a viral infection to an accessory of solidarity and a symbol of obedience to the government.
The case is now becoming a political issue: FPÖ Federal Councilor Markus Leinfellner declared the incident in the Kronenzeitung as “Outstanding scandal. It is unacceptable for a student to be treated like a leper despite having a medical certificate. We Liberals will confront the Minister of Education and the Styrian Education Minister with this case. Going back to business as usual after this incident is by no means possible.”
Parents are contesting legal action against the Voitsberg elementary school
The education department of the federal state of Styria has now declared that it is in talks with the school quality manager. They want to find out how this incident could have happened. In addition, you work closely with the school management, teaching staff and the parents of the 9-year-old student. In the meantime, the parents have said they are considering legal action against those responsible. They hired a lawyer to represent their interests. The Voitsberg elementary school in Styria, where this incredible case is said to have happened, has been silent so far. “If there is misconduct, there will definitely be legal consequences,” said a person responsible for the education department to the Kronenzeitung.
