Because of its high vaccination rate, Bremen is considered the model state in Germany. Now it shines at the same time as the nationwide highest Covid incidence. This is hardly surprising: international analyzes showed long before the appearance of the Omicron variant that the countries with the highest levels of vaccination also had the highest incidences. With Omicron, this trend could be even more serious in the future.
the daily News in her attempts to explain Bremen’s record incidence, cites a spokesman for Sensat, who stated, among other things, that a second or booster vaccination protects against severe disease, but “not so good” against infection with the new Omicron variant. According to the RKI, the variant accounts for 85.5% of Covid cases in Bremen: The protection against infection by the vaccination is therefore now lower.
In truth, the vaccinations against Omicron did not protect against the transmission of the virus – this has been proven time and again in studies (see for example here or here). So this is not an explanation. Rather, analyzes of the official figures show that Omicron could simply be the “variant of the vaccinated”: Vaccinated people are still overrepresented among the Omicron cases – and those German federal states that have a high vaccination rate also tend to have the highest incidences of omicrons. Due to the relatively low Omicron numbers, only the first tendencies can be recognized here – but the German mainstream is just as reluctant to speculate as politicians. With the difference that here all data are consistently interpreted to the disadvantage of the unvaccinated, although the data material allows completely different conclusions.
Corresponding calculations on Omicron cases and vaccination rates were made by the critical YouTuber known as a “subjective student”, among others. His analysis can be understood in the following:
