Among other things, they investigated how quickly an unvaccinated person becomes infected when they come into contact with an infected person. Accordingly, the risk of infection with around five minutes of contact and three meters away without a mask was almost 100 percent. A well-fitting FFP2 mask reduced the risk of infection so much that it was in the per mil range even after 20 minutes of contact at a short distance, as Focus reports. With poorly fitting masks, the risk was still only around four percent. In other words: It is almost impossible to get infected with corona while wearing an FFP2 mask.
But how often can you use a mask without it losing its protective effect? Here, too, the researchers have good news ready: Actually, the masks are only suitable for single use, but even if they are used several times, they significantly reduce the risk of infection – provided they have been properly dried in the oven at 80 degrees. To this end, the scientists compared different models with one another: Although the filter performance decreased in 8 of 15 of the masks tested, it was still within the prescribed range. In other words: the protective function has been retained. In 12 of the 15 models tested, multiple use was generally unproblematic.
