According to the pious wish, you should switch from your car to an e-scooter, especially on short journeys. The only problem is, nobody does that! A research team discovered that shared e-scooters and e-bikes mainly replace modes of transport that are already sustainable. So in reality they provide users with an alternative to trams and bicycles. Car journeys, on the other hand, are replaced less often. And from this point of view, shared scooters and e-bikes harm the climate more than they are good.
To come to this conclusion, researchers collected position data, bookings and survey data from 540 study participants in the city of Zurich over a period of three months. This enabled around 65,000 journeys with eight different modes of transport to be reconstructed. These were supplemented with information about the weather and the mobility options available in each case. The result is a model for choosing a means of transport that includes shared e-scooters, e-bikes, public transport, walking routes and car traffic, reports the “Tagesanzeiger”.
Zurich should be no exception to this result. The researchers assume that the findings can be transferred to most European cities with good public transport. And hardly any other big city has such a good public transport network as Vienna.
Incidentally, private e-scooters and e-bikes performed better in the study. The owners of these devices replace car journeys far more often and consequently emit less CO2 than the means of transport they replace.
