The Omikron variant, the now dominant mutation of Covid-19, continues to spread rapidly throughout Austria – and that once more called the Corona crisis coordination “GECKO” onto the scene. The meeting took place on Tuesday, but what GECKO discussed with the federal government behind closed doors on Tuesday remained and will remain secret for the time being – only on Thursday, when the big Corona summit has taken place, will the Austrian population be given the status afterwards Quo and any new resolutions and measures to be inaugurated. Rumors of a possible new lockdown are rampant, and some would like to play “little mouse” in the meeting rooms to get a small advance update. Of course, GECKO did not provide such an update, but the Green Minister of Health Wolfgang Mückstein did not want to miss the opportunity to break the collective silence on the status quo with a short message on Twitter.
Mückstein, who had already caused displeasure among his coalition partners before the last lockdown by rushing ahead in the ZiB, is once again attracting a lot of attention. Can you read from his words indications of the next, possibly even more strict, measures? Will the next lockdown come? In a three-part thread in the early afternoon Mückstein expressed himself rather cautiously: “New scientific data will show us how things have to go in Austria”, said Mückstein, who is convinced that Austria “regardless of further measures that might be announced on Thursday have already drawn in some effective speed limits for Omikron ”. Among other things, we have implemented tough measures with the existing lockdown for unvaccinated people, the limited number of participants at events and the curfew, ”the doctor tweeted.
In the second part of his thread, Mückstein thanks everyone “who support our protective measures on a daily basis & those who provide tests, corona vaccinations and FFP2 masks, for example. This is how we protect ourselves & others ”, said the politician, who appeals to stay healthy by relying on“ safety and caution ”. Continue to act responsibly on the part of the population.
The federal government has already submitted several complexes of questions to the GECKO committee on the further management of the pandemic in advance. According to the assessment of the crisis team, the corona situation in the country is “still serious.” All efforts should now be aimed at keeping the number of cases as low as possible.
It is completely unclear whether there will be a new lockdown. Some politicians spoke out against it, wanting to “absolutely prevent” a new lockdown – including Vienna’s Mayor Michael Ludwig, who has always followed one of the strictest courses in terms of corona measures with the federal capital. But no one can rule out another lockdown so far. Because the new Omikron variant is so highly infectious, large losses are feared on the labor market, as the Ö1-Frühjournal reported on Tuesday. This could result in the quarantine rules – especially for K1 people – being changed and relaxed.
