This index measures the degree of personal freedom within the population annually. Austria came in 21st in the most recent ranking. The front runner, however, is Switzerland – nowhere is the degree of personal and economic freedom as great as there. In second and third place are New Zealand and Denmark. Germany comes in 15th, ahead of Austria. Syria brings up the rear.
The evaluation takes into account data that go back to 2019. The Corona crisis therefore does not play a role, as the NZZ reports. It is worrying, however, that personal freedoms were already declining around the world before the outbreak of the crisis.
