Basically everyone can of course celebrate the New Year under observance of protective measures – but not in restaurants and bars. Because according to an ordinance of the Ministry of Health, they have to stop operating at 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. In order for this to actually happen, the police are planning appropriate key controls, as the Deputy Director General for Public Security, Reinhard Schnakl, explained in a press conference on Wednesday.
Specifically, the officials want to patrol the popular scene and nightlife district in Vienna. “Celebrate New Year’s Eve, but please do it safely at home in a small group,” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner appealed to all Austrians. Medical Association President Thomas Szekeres also considers larger celebrations dangerous and Major General Rudolf Striedinger advises against gatherings such as demonstrations.
