WienCont is the container depot with the highest turnover in Austria and the subsidiary of the Wien Holding company Hafen Wien. The company is taking advantage of the shortage of empty containers that arose during the Corona crisis in Europe and can achieve its goals for 2021.
WienCont offers comprehensive container business services in the Port of Vienna. In addition to container handling, this also includes storage, maintenance and repairs of empty containers. They also trade in new and used containers. WienCont also offers additional services such as warehouse logistics and customs services. The corona crisis posed many challenges for the company, but the pandemic also opened up new opportunities.
Due to the pandemic, the utilization of the empty depot areas in the terminal declined, as the loading units turned much faster in 2021. As a result, the equipment from the import was reloaded much faster. Container repairs are currently being carried out more and more in the Far East instead of in Europe, which means declining sales in the area of container repairs.
WienCont in Austria benefits from the lack of operational containers by offering shippers empty containers for sale. Business in this area is flourishing despite the corona pandemic.
“As part of the Central European top logistics center Hafen Wien, WienCont has been operating one of the largest and most modern trimodal container terminals for 40 years now. Especially in times of pandemic, WienCont is even more important as an infrastructure-relevant supply company for the City of Vienna, ”emphasizes Wien Holding Managing Director Kurt Gollowitzer.
“Thanks to the large gains in container trading and the positive development of the location as an important hub in the international intermodal networks, we will also achieve our goals for 2021. We can compensate for declines in the areas of container depot and container repair, ”said Monika Gindl-Muzik, the new managing director of WienCont.
By the end of the year, 450,000 TEU (20-foot standard containers) are to be handled in the Freudenau port. In the port of Freudenau, further areas are therefore to be made available for the manipulation of semi-trailers.
Due to the growth of continental traffic, the need for dangerous goods handling is also increasing. Thanks to its own dangerous goods container, the WienCont is also able to safely handle dangerous goods containers in the port of Vienna.
The expansion of the terminal is to be driven forward in the next few years. With this, WienCont wants to continue to meet the requirements of customers and the logistics market in the future.
