Countless women worldwide complained about changes in their menstruation after their Covid vaccinations: Most of these supposed “isolated cases” have so far been dismissed or referred to as coincidences Stress pushed. Study data from Norway now show that abnormalities such as heavier and longer menstrual bleeding could very well be related to the vaccines.
One Study by the Norwegian Health Institute Based on surveys of almost 4,000 menstruating women between 18 and 30 years of age, NIPH showed a significant increase in menstrual changes after vaccination. While only about 7.6% of the participants had heavy bleeding before the first vaccination, the proportion of women who reported heavy menstrual bleeding after the first dose was 13.6%. After the second dose the percentage increased to 15.3%. Besides that There was more prolonged bleeding and more severe pain during their period in vaccinated women. Two thirds of women who noticed menstrual changes after the first vaccination also had them after the second vaccination. The majority of the participants had been vaccinated with the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna.
A peer review of the study is still pending. Project leader Lill Trogstad said that although menstrual changes are generally very common, the percentages apparently increased after vaccination. She sees a clear need for further analyzes and investigations to clarify the connection.
At least after the first vaccination, the changes in the majority of women were apparently only of a temporary nature and allegedly lasted two to three months – in practical terms, probably on time until the next vaccination. For the duration of the abnormalities after the second dose there is no data yet. The NIPH recommends that after heavy or persistent bleeding after a vaccine dose, further vaccinations should first be given until the symptoms have disappeared and the causes have been medically clarified. According to Trogstad, these findings should not deter women from vaccinating.
The effect of the vaccine on fertility is unknown
Since connections between menstrual changes and the Covid shot have so far been categorically excluded, the data from Norway are definitely explosive – they prove that the women affected are by no means “isolated cases”. Georgy Genov, Head of the Pharmacovigilance Unit of the European Medicines Agency, said in response to the study publication that the symptoms were only temporary. He did not want to admit a causal connection to the vaccination. For this purpose, further studies are necessary, in which, for example, the hormone status would have to be ascertained. It remains to be seen whether these are planned.
How exactly the vaccination influences the female cycle has not been clarified in the absence of specific investigations. The director of the University Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics in Münster had already in September It should be borne in mind that immunological processes definitely influence many physical processes: “A vaccination on an immunological basis aims to build up a defense reaction. The immune cells involved are also found in the uterus and are involved in every normal menstrual cycle. Altered immune cells could also cause a bleeding disorder. ”
The EMA is undoubtedly aware that the menstrual changes also raise questions about the influence of the vaccine on fertility. Genov emphasized that the EMA did not have any data showing an impact of the Covid vaccines on fearfulness. The fact that no data is available does not mean that this possibility is excluded: after all, long-term effects and interactions of the Covid vaccines have not yet been researched at all; also for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding are only very limited experience before. “No data” at this point means something like “you don’t know”. However, empirical values seem to be increasing among doctors of late, which do point to a negative influence of the vaccine on fertility and pregnancy. The calls from concerned doctors for systematic examinations have so far gone unheard.
