Austrian researchers have in a study found that people who are both vaccinated and recovered have superimmunity to the new variant.
The scientists at the University of Innsbruck examined blood samples from vaccinated, convalescent and people who were both vaccinated and had been infected with the Delta variant.
In the five samples from people who had first received an infection and then two vaccinations, the antibodies were best able to neutralize the new variant. The five samples from people who first had two doses of vaccine and then had an infection with the virus also showed very good immunity in laboratory tests.
Such a “hybrid immunity” provides better protection against the new Omikron variant. And there is another exciting discovery to report: They also examined blood samples from people who had received a cross-vaccination with one dose of AstraZeneca and one dose of Biontech. Compared to the other vaccines, the antibodies created by cross-vaccination were able to fight the omicron variant even better.
