Every year not only the Christ Child comes, no – the hope for a white Christmas also accompanies us as a fixed tradition. Because nothing puts the perfect (snow) cap on the happy festivities than fresh snowflakes that bathe everything in romantic white. This year there was already the first snow – the greater the hope for a white Christmas. But how much hope can we have?
The chances are there: in the next week the temperatures will drop, at Christmas it looks like highs around the freezing point. There will be little snow until then. Where there is currently a blanket of snow, it will still be white around the festival. At the moment, Carinthia, Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg are most likely looking for a white Christmas.
The low areas of Upper and Lower Austria as well as Vienna and Northern Burgenland are currently without snow. It is very uncertain whether there will be fresh snow by Christmas. From the current perspective, maximum temperatures of only around zero degrees are to be expected in the federal capital on Christmas Eve.
In the area of the Alps from 500, 600 meters above sea level there is currently a thin blanket of snow that will last until the holidays. The higher regions of the mountains are covered in deep snow anyway, reported the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).
