General becomes the new pandemic manager for Austria
In light of the impending wave of omicrons, the government is institutionalizing a pandemic management task force. At their head are Major General Rudolf Striedinger and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Katharina Reich.

Now the federal government is setting up a “nationwide Covid crisis coordination” (Gecko). At the top are Major General Rudolf Striedinger and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Katharina Reich. The government wants to “structurally reorganize” the pandemic management before an impending Omikron wave, as announced on Friday evening.
Gecko is not intended to replace any of the existing bodies. Rather, one bundles a “team of the best minds” based on the German model. A team of leading experts from science, operational implementation and communication will be formed for this purpose.
The stated goal is to be “as well prepared as possible” for the impending wave of infections from the Omikron variant and for possible further Covid-19 virus variants.
